OUR MISSION

Blackout is a theatre company founded in 2007 with the goal of creating new and original works, as well as pushing the boundaries of published works. Working as an ensemble, the company will primarily use comedy to explore different facets of theatre and the performing arts. Blackout also seeks to foster an environment of artistic exploration in the community at large via outreach and collaborative efforts.

The Ensemble: Blackout creates productions as an ensemble in which everyone is trained to do everything. No one is simply an actor, or a designer, or a writer. Everyone participates and collaborates in every step of the artistic process from conception to opening night, to touring. This ensemble is also known as Blackout’s Artistic Core. Blackout is also dedicated to growing and exploring artistically together, and thus provides training and workshops in areas in which members are interested in exploring. Thus new ideas and modes of performance are constantly developing.

Innovation: Blackout strives to take artistic risk through the creation of new works and the exploration and implementation of extreme physicality, guerilla, and environmental theatre. Blackout also dedicates itself to exploration not only on the stage but on film and in other multi-media environments.

Outreach: Blackout strives to reach out to the community at large, not only to provide performance and training opportunities to those who are interested, but to learn from other artists and constantly incorporate new ideas. Blackout is always interested in collaboration. Using vehicles such as Blackout Tonight, Blackout hopes to teach, learn, create and play with as many artists from the community as possible.
